Kate Lee (Bentley Upper school, 12th)

I started at Soho Art since middle school and the program provided great technical foundation work as well as the freedom to express myself too. This aspect of Ms. Kim’s teaching style stands out to other types of art education I received. She helped me improve intensely and provided so much support in my artistic endeavors. I have always wanted to pursue an art career and had to make portfolios for college. Through the vigorous path of college applications, there were times I went through slumps but Ms. Kim helped me by showing new positive perspectives and alternatives. This program offers great foundation, but also the the opportunity to experiment with multiple mediums such as oil paint, acrylic paint, colored pencils, water color, sculptures, and even animation. Another great feature of Soho art is the beneficial feedback / critique from Ms. Kim, but also your peers. There is no division among the students as we all try to help each other. Over all, Soho Art always thrives for her students’ success and happiness.

Emily chao (Amador valley Hight School,12th)

I started going to Soho Art Studio as a junior in high school with the goal of creating an art portfolio to apply to art colleges.  I had always done drawing as a hobby, but the year and a half time I spent at Soho Art Studio was when the world of art making and practice truly opened up to me. I was able to learn every step of making an art piece and improving both technical skill and creative thinking, from learning and experimenting with visual composition techniques to executing an idea into a finished product. Ms. Kim is a very hardworking and patient teacher —she understands each students’ interests and talents and makes the effort to know them on an individual level. Her knowledge, honest feedback, and support helped me through the challenges and successes of creating art. Because I went to Soho I was able to improve more than I ever thought I could, and can continue my passion for art in college with more confidence and experience.

After winter break in my sophomore year, I came to the Soho Art Studio. Mrs. Kim introduced me to various art techniques, theories, ideas, and experiences. I have dreamed of studying art since I was young. However, I did not have any specific goal besides my thought that I vaguely wanted to do art, which barely motivated me to create artwork. Whenever I had a hard time making new ideas or completing artwork, Mrs. Kim helped me get over it. She considered individual students' personalities. So, she taught me in a different style than others to encourage me to express my potential. This helped me set the specific goal that I started thinking about what kinds of art I want to study more in college. Also, I was so thrilled to understand what great artwork is and why they are so great. It made me even more passionate about art than ever.

I am satisfied with all the artwork, the college art portfolio, and also the college acceptance results. It could not be done without Mrs. Kim's help at Soho Art Studio.
